The Golf GTI was introduced in 1976, and initiated the hot hatch genre. Right-hand drive versions were available for the UK from 1978. Special features included black wheel arch extensions, a black frame around the rear window, red edge around the radiator grille, tartan sports seats, a golf ball gear knob and a sports steering wheel.
The fuel-injected 1588cc engine developed 110 bhp through the front wheels. A minor exterior revision in 1978 replaced the previous bumpers with moulded units that wrapped around the sides of the car, like the one shown here.
