The AC Cobra can trace its origins to the AC Ace of 1951. In 1961, former American racing driver Carroll Shelby approached AC to supply bodies and chassis to the US, so he could fit larger engines, initially Ford 4.2 litre V8s. None were sold in the UK until 1964. Later ones were 427s with a re-working of the chassis and bigger wings to cover wider wheels and tyres.
Over 1000 rolling chassis built at AC Thames Ditton, England were shipped to Shelby American to finish off as Cobras - a wonderfully successful partnership.
Production ceased in 1968, but the rights to make updated cars continued, and many Cobra replicas have been available, mainly with glass-fibre bodies.
